This is the class Ariane is most excited about. At this stage it is going to be the most in depth course and will take you on an adventure to create a garment of your choosing.

Fabric shops sell ready made garment patterns, which can be very daunting to a new machinist. Together with Ariane you will go through the process of selecting a pattern right through to constructing a well fitting garment

Key Take away's / Learning's from the class:

Understanding the back of a sewing pattern packet

Measuring your body and selecting which size is closest to you based on the knowledge given

Trace the pattern - introduction to using a wheel

Prove the seams

Adapt the pattern to your measurements - does the waist need to be made smaller, the hips bigger, sleeve longer?

In-depth information on fabric usages and cutting waste

Precision with pattern making and the importance of it

Basic pattern manipulation (if required for your design)

Correct Pattern Annotations

Constructing the garment

Correct information on how to apply finishing - Zips, buttons, press studs etc as per your garments requirements

Finishing techniques to ensure a high quality garment which will wear well

Pre Class Requirements:

1. Completed the Introductory to Overlocker's class using either your own machine or one of Ariane's

or

2. Discussed with Ariane that you have suitable recent experience with a machine to be able to enjoy this class.

You can choose in this class if you would prefer to work with woven or knit fabrics  - as it is a smaller number of students who will be in the class we will be able to ensure you all have the correct help to achieve success with your garments so long as you have an understanding of basic sewing

What to bring with you:

A note book

Fabric: Expect to buy your fabric between week 1 and 2. This will vary from student to student due to the choice of garment that you make - it should be no more than 3 meters of fabric as a guide. After selecting which pattern you would like to proceed with for the course, Ariane will help you to understand the best type of fabric. Please note, this course will not cover using sequin fabrics due to the complexity

If you are using your own Sewing Machine or Overlocker please bring it from week's 2 on wards. You will also need the machine pedal, threads and machine specific needles

If you do not have your own Sewing Machine or Overlocker - you are welcome to use one of Ariane's - the number of these is limited, so please advise at the time of booking if you will need one so that the class numbers can be arranged correctly - thank you. If you need to use one of these machines please ensure that your fabric needs BLACK threads, as this is what the machines will be set up to use

What would you receive:

A finished garment that has been taken from the paper pattern, altered to fit your measurements and constructed to a professional standard

A paper pattern traced by you from one of the offered pre-bought patterns

The option to work with either woven or stretch fabric

A wider knowledge of garment pattern making, cutting and construction methods
